Everybody goes through an identity crisis at least once, but America's Chinese adoptive daughters have more complex issues as they try to piece together their hardly known pasts. With more than 62,000 mostly daughters adopted from China since 1990, adoptive parents are taking them back to visit orphanages, seek foster parents and caregivers and simply observe Chinese lifestyles. The likelihood of ever finding a birthparent is remote but not impossible, as orphanages do not have that information--relinquishing a child is considered a crime.
My documentary follows six families on a Chinese heritage tour and focuses on the daughters' insights into their own adoptions and Asian American identities. Several adult Korean adoptees also share experiences and advice with this next generation of adoptees.
